Interior Signs

Almost every type of building has a different interior sign requirement, these can include directional signs, department name signs, directory signs and door signs. They must of course display safety signs. (see separate blog)

Wayfinding

Most office buildings will be accessed by employees and a varying number of visitors Amongst these visitors there will people who also have special needs. The main point of internal signs is to ensure that everybody can find their destination with the minimum of fuss or input from others.

If the building is occupied by more than one company then a directory sign, close to the entrance / reception is vital. This reassures the visitor that they have arrived in the right place. If the directory is well designed, it will display a floor number and essential access details of the occupier. This directory sign will also include the location of essential services such as toilets, breakout areas, lifts, and stairs etc.

This type of sign can also be used if the building is occupied by one company but has a lot of open access departments.
At any junction after the main directory sign, directional signs with arrows should be used to guide the visitor to the destination. Along the route facilities should be identified with the use of door signs and or department name signs.

Visitors with special needs.

Not every building is adapted to the needs of every person however, signs can play an important part in this process. For instance, signs with raised (tactile) lettering can be useful to people with impaired vision. Signs of this nature can be useful in lifts and on in otherwhere an individual might not be escorted. Signs that identify wheelchair routes or accessible toilets have their obvious benefits

If your building is particularly complex any professional sign company will be able to provide you with a comprehensive way finding survey to make sure that no essential signs are missed out.
